As a recent alum of Harvard College, I remember all too well the joys and the challenges of undergraduate life—and that’s part of the reason I stuck around after graduation: to help undergrads make it through life at Harvard and thrive in the midst of it!
Harvard being full of brilliant wonderful people—I didn’t doubt I’d make friends and learn a ton in my classes and have an amazing time overall, but I arrived freshman year hungry for more—hungry for God. I came in asking the deeper questions—what was it all for? Who was Jesus, and why did that matter? Who was I, when I was no longer the smartest, nicest, best-looking, strongest Christian student at my local high school or at my church at home? What about other faiths—did they hold truth too? What should I be about during my time here—and what would I do afterwards?
Because I ended up having an incredible four years of life here getting answers to some of these hard questions and many more through engaging in honest dialogue and conversation with blockmates, friends, classmates, and professors from all different backgrounds, one of my favorite things to do now is to hang out with students over a meal and discuss life: talk about what’s going on in their lives, listen to their stories, and pray for and with them if they’re open to that. I love fielding random questions, encouraging an inquisitive spirit about the things of God, listening to relationship drama, and talking about Jesus. Whether you’re looking for a sounding board or a shoulder to cry on—or an older friend or mentor—or something else entirely—e-mail me and let’s meet up!
I’m pursuing the Master of Divinity degree slowly and steadily; I’ve done some work on that degree near by at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (at their urban ministry campus in Roxbury, MA)—and far away at Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology. My time in Kenya gave me an incredible perspective on what it is we’re about here in Cambridge—and I’d love to tell you more about that in person!
As a Harvard Chaplain, I represent three campus ministries to the university: the multi-ethnic Harvard-Radcliffe Christian Fellowship (www.hcs.harvard.edu/~hrcf), the ethnic-specific Asian-American Christian Fellowship (www.hraacf.org), and Soul Food, also known as the H-R Black Christian Fellowship. I work primarily with the students of HRCF, but partner closely with the staff and students of HRAACF and HRBCF. All are vibrant communities of faith that are totally open to undergrads from all different faith backgrounds and traditions. Their vision is to leave no part out but bring the whole gospel to the whole campus to transform the whole world. You’re always welcome!!
My ministry is sponsored by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, an evangelical campus mission serving more than 35,000 students and faculty on more than 560 college and university campuses nationwide. Incorporated in 1941, InterVarsity has a rich tradition of campus witness, thoughtful discipleship, and a concern for world missions. (www.intervarsity.org)
